The Showtime Lakers Are Back, Baby!

Following a monumental off-season where a blockbuster trade sent three Lakers and three first-round picks to the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for Anthony Davis (AD), it looks like the Showtime Lakers are back. Led by LeBron James and AD, the Lakers have reestablished themselves as one of the best teams in the league. As of today, they have a 5 game lead over the rest of the Western Conference. The question now is: will everyone stay healthy? They need to if the team is going to continue to gel throughout the season and into the postseason. LeBron has missed one game with a groin issue and another with an illness. Anthony Davis, despite only missing four games, is questionable for just about every contest as he battles ongoing shoulder issues.

The Lakers’ roommates at Staples Center, the Clippers, had an equally monumental offseason. Led by their ambitious owner Steve Balmer and head coach Doc Rivers, the Clippers signed the number one free agent on the market, Kawhi Leonard, and traded a couple of players and a series of draft picks to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for Los Angeles native Paul George. The Clippers are one of the teams that trail the Lakers by 4 games but the Clippers have won both of the head to head matchups this season, most recently their 111-106 victory over the Lakers on Christmas Day. Although the teams have two more matchups on their schedule, the ultimate battle for LA would be 7 straight games at the Staples Center in what would be a star-studded (both on the court and in the stands) playoff series.
